fit food friday - super berry smoothie

Whether you’re trying to kick an illness, keep yourself strong and healthy, or simply like really delicious smoothies, this one is for you.

It boasts a powerhouse of nutrients thanks to the sorcerer’s stone of superfoods, goji berries. They are the most nutrient dense fruit on the planet, goji berries. They contain all amino acids (read, are a complete protein) and nicknamed the longevity fruit.

Current evidence shows that due to their amino acides and sesquiterpenoids (say-a whata) with anti-inflammatory properties that stimulate pituitary and pineal glands, goji berries increase production of HGH (human growth hormone), which decreases as we age.

This is all science talk for saying that they slow aging and keeps us feeling and looking young and healthy.

So go ahead. Make this smoothie and invite everyone to come see how good you look.

What you’ll need:

  • frozen banana (frozen part is key people, I suggest having banana pieces in your freezer at all times!)
  • 1/3 cup goji berries mixed with 1 3/4 cups water(this will make 2 servings worth)
  • 1/2 cup frozen, organic raspberries
  • 1 cup of non-dairy milk of choice
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
  • Optional 1 tsp maca powder and 1 tbsp chia seeds

What you’ll do:

  1. Add goji berries to water in a jar the day/night before, so the water will absorb it’s nutrients and berries become soft (see below left). This will make enough for 2 smoothies  – you and a friend, or your lucky self two days in a row!
  2. Morning of, add half of the goji mixture (berries & water), frozen bananas, frozen raspberries, protein powder,  milk, and other optional ingredients (maca powder & chia seeds) to high speed blender.
  3. Blend.
  4. Serve, enjoy, and feel great.

Meet the Mob: Melissa Jardine

Meet Melissa. She’s a color-runnin’, cheese-lovin’, and future Amazing Race winnin’ mobstar. Her motivation is so contagious that we were about ready workout just from talking to her. Let’s find out more, shall we?

fitmob: How would you describe fitmob in three words?

M: Fun. Fulfilling. Fresh. Bam, made it three F’s!

fitmob: Nice, we’ll have to use those sometime! What gets you moving when you don’t want to?

M: The outdoors. I love that fitmob offers outdoor classes and takes advantage of one of those gorgeous cities in the world! Being outdoors and in the fresh air is just inspiring, especially when so many others are out being active as well.

I‘d also say music. Put on the right jam and I have a hard time staying still!

fitmob: What is your greatest fitness accomplishment?

M: I’ve run a few half marathons and climbed half dome, which were pretty big accomplishments for me. But my best is yet to come, I’d really like to complete a sprint triathlon!

fitmob: Sounds like the best is indeed still yet to come! Okay, if you could only eat one food for the rest of our life what would it be?

M: I’m gonna need some requirement clarification here ;) General food category? Can I say carbs? Haha. Ok but specific food, probably either cheese or cereal. I still didn’t choose one did I? Cheese. Mmm now I want some cheese!

fitmob: Haha sorry! Let’s change the subject . Who would win a battle between a pirate and a ninja, and why?

M: Ninja for sure. But you wouldn’t know he won, now would you? It’s a trick question.

fitmob: You are on a deserted island with a team of mobbers. Now what?

M: Find the hallow part in the sand, dig up the rum, drink the rum, build a bonfire, and probably end up drunken skinny dipping to end a great first night. :) Then we’d be screwed because where are we going to find cheese on an island?!

fitmob: What is your dream workout ?

M: Being outdoors with nice scenery (that could be a lot of things!), getting pushed to the max, laughing, some competition (some don’t like group workouts, but I’m super competitive so like hen there’s a challenge!), and walking away feeling completely exhausted. I really like a good hard workout, which is why I enjoy having an instructor to push me.

I’d say if I had to pick a specific thing, though, it would be competing in the Amazing Race in some really cool country!!

So….do you need a partner?!

You can come get your chance to partner up with Melissa to win a million - worst case scenario, you’ll get in a major workout! Join her this week - just be sure to sign up on the app or at!

See you there! Let’s hope there’s cheese :)

Mob Lead Monday - Benjie Go

It’s Go time.

Introducing our newest Mob Lead, Benjie Go, who is about to help you get your cardio on every Monday and Wednesday morning.

On everything from what got him into fitness to his guilty pleasure (it’s good), here’s more on Benjie.

fitmob: How would you describe your new workout, House of Cardio?

B: Safe, effective, challenging and never boring

fitmob: What song describes your class?

B: Awake and Alive by Skillet.  ”…now I know what I believe inside, now its my time I’ll do what I want, this is my life….”

fitmob: What are your first memories of your fitness passion as a child?

B: Growing up in the Philippines, I spent a lot of time in the ocean.  I was always in the water swimming and snorkeling. Laying on the sand all day did not make sense to me.

fitmob: Why do you teach?

B: I feel very fortunate to be able to directly help make people’s lives better, including mine, through fitness. It’s quite inspiring to see my participants realize how much stronger, faster and leaner they’ve become.

fitmob: What inspires you to get active when you don’t feel like it?

B: I was significantly overweight mostly due to inactivity and I will never let that happen to me again.

fitmob: What type of sport do you like that we might not expect?

B: Skydiving.  I jumped 3 times, and look forward to doing it again.  Nothing like staring down 5,000 feet when the plane door opens.

fitmob: Where is the coolest or craziest place you’ve worked out?

B: The coolest have to be in Kauai.  The place I was staying at was right on a cliff and I woke up at dawn everyday to catch the sunrise, hear the crashing waves and run, jump, twist and sweat.

fitmob: What’s your guilty pleasure?

B: Anything DEEP FRIED!  Still in search of deep fried ice cream…

fitmob You need to get fried bananas with coconut ice cream, you’ll die. Best combo ever.

Okay, so if you could live in one other time period ever, when would it be?

B: None, I value modern amenities.  But as a snapshot in time, the time of the dinosaurs would be intriguing, just the thrill of seeing them live.

fitmob: Zombies have invaded the Earth – who’d be on your fighting team?

B: Alice from Resident Evil!!! Woohoo!

fitmob: If you were stuck in a salad bowl how would you get out?

B: Build a wall out of croutons so I can climb out.

fitmob: Any last words for anyone thinking of coming to your workout?

B: You will regret missing a workout, but never regret finishing one.  Let’s do this together!

Wanna get your cardio on? Join Benji every Monday and Wednesday morning at 6:30am in the Marina (at Sweat Republic). Sign up on the app or at – you won’t regret it!

fit food friday - homemade almond milk

Almond Milk is all the rage in the health world. So much so, people are actually selling it by the bottle for $9 a pop.

And people like me have been buying it.

Those $9 for almond milk?! Psh YEAH RIGHT versions that you hate on until you try them and are like, excuse me do you sell these in packages of 20?

You know the almond milk I’m talking about – they’re the reason most people get through the first day of  a juice cleanse and are usually made with dates, agave, vanilla extract, (often times) coffee, and (most likely) crack.

I decided I have way too many expensive healthy food addictions and I should to a stab at making my own from scratch. And (spoiler alert) it was a huge success).

Making homemade milk comes with the added benefits of knowing all of the ingredients that go into your beverage (as many of the almond milk brands stores have a longer ingredient lists than Coco Puffs) as well as having some seriously delicous almond milk on hand at all times.

It was surprisingly simple, though as you’d expect, a tad more time consuming than buying from the store since you have to soak and prep the almonds. Besides that, though, it was totally smooth sailing. And by smooth sailing, I mean drinking this…

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 cups raw almonds soaked in 3 cups water
  • 6 cups water for the almond milk
  • Nut Milk Bag…ha. ha. Yes, a nut milk bag. I bought mine at Whole Foods but you can on Amazon as well.
  • High Speed Blender (I used my NutriBullet)
  • 3 soaked and then pitted dates (for larger or sweeter batches, use more dates)
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (same as above)
  • dash or 2 of sea salt

Here’s what you’ll do:

1. Soak almonds in 3 cups water for at least 8 hours (overnight is a good). You can soak your dates at this point as well.

2. Drain almonds from soaked water. Then remove the skin from the almonds one by one and move naked almonds (let’s be honest, they’re naked) into another bowl. They should just pop out of your finger tips. To be completely honest, this being the most time consuming part, I have forgoed it several times and while removing skins is ideal (they hold tannins that impede digestion), I found it is worth skipping if it’s stopping you from making them. image3. Blend your naked almonds in a 1:3 ratio with water. For my blender I found it was best to do 3 batches – 1 cup of almond with 3 cups of water, with the final batch being a much smaller amount of both almonds and water (you’ll have more than 2 cups of almonds since soaking has made them larger.

4. Blend for 10-20 seconds and then pour into your nut milk bag, held over a large mason jar, bowl, or open top pitcher.

5. Then squeeze the liquid out of the nut milk bag. The remaining almond meal can be used in recipes (bars, baked goods, etc.) so you can bag and freeze those leftovers. image

6. Repeat until you are finished with all of the nuts and have a beautiful bowl of almond milk you can move into a mason jar as is or continue below.

(Now the fun begins.)

7. You can make your own delectable $10 juice cleanse knock off by blending it with the soaked (and pitted!) dates, in 2 batches if you have a smalle blender. Add dash of vanilla extract and sea salt to each batch as you go. As you get into almond-milk-making (yes, it’s a thing), you can experiment with other flavors, adding a dash of cinnamon or peppermind extract instead of vanilla.

9. Then move final milk into a large mason jar or other liquid holder of choice.

But you should probably have a couple sips of this stuff first because its pretty darn magical.

Just YUM.

Meet the Mob - Rachel Chibidakis

It’s time for your mid-week treat of a behind the scenes look into the life of one of our top mobbers.

This week, meet Rachel. She’s one motivated runner, cycler, and mobber extraordinaire and she wants to hear you roar!

(Check out that view though!)

fitmob: So Rachel, besides these killer runs you go on, what is your greatest fitness accomplishment?

R: My first century bike ride: 117 miles, 10k feet in climbing and nasty ITBS but it got done.

fitmob: Wow, you’re a beast! Good work. How would you describe fitmob in three words?

R: Exercise the demons!

fitmob: We’re going to assume that is a good thing? Haha. So what gets you moving when you don’t want to?

R: I guess it helps that the two-headed moat sea-monster from Willow chases me in my dreams if I don’twork out.

fitmob: We’re going to assume you have to have seen the movie to get that one, too.  What is your dream workout?

R: Cycling and/or running to the top of some ungodly but amazingly beautiful mountain only to find the best brewery ever.

fitmob: We get that one for sure! If you could only eat one food for the rest of our life what would it be?

R: My world famous tapenade.

fitmob: YUM! If you were to be a fitness instructor one day, what would you teach?

R: Flag Football!

fitmob: You are on a deserted island with a team of mobbers. Now what?

R: Who brought the wine?

fitmob: Great question. Here’s another one: who would win a battle between a pirate and a ninja?

R: A ninja.  Would you have your money on Jack Sparrow or Mr. Miyagi?

fitmob: Mr. Miyagi…though I think we’d want to keep Captain Jack around too for our island adventure. Do you have any last words to your fellow mobbers?

You can get your roar on with Rachel at the next fitmob workout (and pray she’s brought her world famous tapenade with her)! RSVP on the app or at Who knows, if you come to enough workouts, you may be featured next!

fitmob + Fit Kids: A Match Made in Heaven

This weekend fitmob kicked off its partnership with Fit Kids in the most fitting way possible…by working out!

The co-sponsored Children’s Champions event went down this last Saturday at Stanford, complete with student and professional athletes, team mascots like Lou Seal (Giants) and Q (Earthquakes), and some of your favorite fitmob ninjas.

So what is Fit Kids, you may ask?

It’s a Bay Area based foundation that offers high quality after school fitness programs to students in underserved areas, free of charge. Now with fitmob they will have the resources needed to establish a consistent presence in San Francisco.

The fundrasier turned into quite the celebration, complete with over 350 smiling faces, tutus, and workouts that resembled playtime.

Almost 150 Fit Kids were in attendance to get active simply for the fun of it, which is precisely the premise of Fit Kids and fitmob alike.

The goal of Fit Kids is to inspire a love of physical activity, serving as a foundation for healthy living and self-confidence, which is very similar to our own mission. It’s practically a match made in heaven!

A portion of fitmob’s flake fee (the cost of a workout no-show) goes directly to Fit Kids. But bigger and better yet, fitmob will be holding ongoing fun-filled workouts on behalf of Fit Kids in San Francisco starting this week.

Every Monday and Wednesday from 3:00-3:45pm, Mob Leads Jamal Williams and Alexis Craig will take turns leading workouts at the Boys & Girls Club for kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade.

The first will be held this Wednesday with Alexis, marking the beginning of a great movement to get more children active after school.

Talk about the future of fitness!

Meet the Mob - Milli Bruce

Alas, Monday, you’re here again. Funny how you have a habit of showing up every week like ths.

Lucky for your Monday, fitmob is here to add some fun in your week so you don’t have to wait until the weekend.

Like social workouts and social…non-workouts (Margs & Mayhem tonight at HQ, for starters).

We keep the workout part fun by having some of the best trainers in the city who always keep things interesting. One in particular being Milli Bruce.

She’s a tackle football playin’ Aussie and generally awesome person to be around. You can now join her new sports-centric, a** kickin’ workout  that will have you playing to win. But really. It’s game time.

Here’s Milli with more.

fitmob: What should a mobber expect in your class, In It to Win It!?

M: They should expect not just a workout, but more like a sports practice that we did when we were kids.

We work on speed, power and agility, in sports related drills, but in teams. We all have an athlete somewhere inside of us, and with the crazy busy lives we lead, our opportunities to satisfy our inner competitive spirit are less and less.

Also— there’s a LOT of running!

fitmob: What song would you say best describes your class?

M: Eye of the Tiger.

fitmob: Why do you teach?

M: I love the energy and satisfaction and happiness that you get from an ass-kicking, super, sweaty workout. I want everyone to experience that.

fitmob: What inspires you to get active when you don’t feel like it?

M: Great music, and being upside down! Nothing gets me amped like a few handstands and backflips!

fitmob: Backflips!? Is that what sport got you hooked on fitness?

M: I was an elite gymnast so a lot of my memories relate to that. My first memories were trying to do a pull-over (a skill on the bars) and wanting to be able to do it so badly that I tried and tried until my hands were all torn up and bleeding. But I did it!

So I’m a gymnast turned tackle football player! When I’m not leading workouts and personal training, I’m playing with the San Francisco Iron Maidens, who compete nationally.

fitmob:  Well this is just all around awesome. Where is the craziest place you’ve worked out?

M: On a road trip to LA, my best friend and I stopped at every roadhouse and had to do 100 jumping jacks before we got back in the car!

fitmob: That’s one way to make a roadtrip interesting! Okay, fun questions. Zombies have invaded the Earth – who’d be on your fighting team?

M: Chuck Norris, Bear Grylls and Joel McHale (mostly for comedic relief).

fitmob: If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

M: Simple and cliche— but I’d love to be able to fly!

fitmob: Any last words for anyone thinking of coming to your workout?

M: Bring a fun attitude, your running shoes, and be ready to work in a team.

You heard the girl! Coach Milli is ready to bring out the athlete in you, every Thursday at noon at Brannan Street Wharf. RSVP on the app or at

fit food friday: green tea smoothie

It’s pretty safe to that assume anything this green is healthy.

And while drinking your greens may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you wake up, this energizing smoothie might give your regular protein shake or oats a run for their money.

That’s cuz it’s made with matcha green tea, which is pretty much magical in the tea world. It’s in powder form and loaded with up to 10x’s more nutritional benefits than your regular cup of green tea since you’re ingesting the entire tea leaf.

So that’s 10x’s more energizing than your regular cup of tea, as well. Not the jacked up on coffee, high on life and then jittery and exhausted type of energy. Matcha tea is commonly said to create a state of relaxed alertness. Lasting, yet calm, energy that won’t give you a crash afterwards. Not to mention the slew of other health benefits you get because of green tea.

And it can actually taste great! Especially when made in smoothie form. Like green tea ice cream, really. You can add in some spinach if you’re really diggin’ this whole healthy breakfast thing; I promise it won’t affect the sweet tea taste!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 frozen banana (again, frozen is key, do this the night before, keeping peeled then quartered bananas in your freezer on the reg)
  • 1 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla plant based protein powder
  • 0ptional - 1 handful of spinach (your body will thank you!)
  • 1 tsp maca powder - an extra, all natural energy boost!
  • 1 tsp matcha green tea powder (if you’re very sensitive to caffeine you can use 1/2 tsp)

What you’ll do:

Blend all ingredients together then serve.

Enjoy your relaxed alertness, perhaps after a yoga session or a killer fitmob workout,  so you’ll essentially feel ready to take on the entire world.
